Summary

Adds one admin-configured frequency to the squad radio: tune in and its range shrinks to a short distance for local comms. No new items or slots — everything else stays vanilla.

Official Workshop description

SHORT RANGE RADIO Adds one extra, admin-configured frequency to the existing personal (Group/squad) radio. Manually tune your radio's dial to that frequency and its range shrinks to a short, configurable distance for local-only comms — tune away and it instantly goes back to normal vanilla behavior. Nothing else changes: no new item, no new radio, no new channel slot, no prefab changes. Default squad and platoon radio behavior is completely untouched unless you opt in. Since matching frequencies already lets players hear each other in vanilla, any player who dials in to the shared local frequency will hear other players on it within the configured short range — regardless of squad. HOW TO USE - Open your radio menu (G) or use Q/E to cycle channels on your personal radio. - Cycle one step above Platoon (or dial the frequency directly) to reach "Local". - While tuned to Local, your radio's range is shrunk to the configured distance. - Tune back to your squad or platoon frequency to instantly restore normal range. SERVER ADMIN CONFIGURATION This mod is configured per-server via a JSON file, so it's admin-editable without needing to republish the mod: $profile:ShortRangeRadio.json A default file is created automatically on first run. Fields: - m_fLocalRadioRangeMeters — the short range (in meters) applied while tuned to Local (default: 500) - m_iLocalFrequencyKhzUS / m_iLocalFrequencyKhzUSSR / m_iLocalFrequencyKhzFIA — the Local channel's frequency (in kHz), one per faction Pick frequency values that don't collide with your server's actual platoon/squad frequencies (platoon is 48000 kHz US / 42000 kHz USSR+FIA; squad frequencies start at 38000 kHz and climb by 500 kHz per squad). COMPATIBILITY Works entirely through the existing vanilla radio system — no new prefabs or items, so it should be compatible with most other mods. Tested live on a dedicated server, including with multiple players.

- Added: one admin-configured extra frequency ("Local") on the existing personal/squad radio
- Added: tuning to the Local frequency shrinks that radio's range to a configurable short distance (default 500m)
- Added: tuning away from Local instantly restores the radio's original vanilla range
- Added: Local frequency reachable via Q/E channel cycling, one step above Platoon (Squad -> ... -> Platoon -> Local)
- Added: Local frequency also reachable by manually dialing to it with the scroll wheel
- Added: "Local (<range>m)" channel label shown in the radio menu while tuned to it, matching vanilla's own label styling
- Added: label also shown correctly in the radial G-menu's frequency browser (Previous/Current/Next)
- Added: label persists correctly across VON/radio menu close and reopen
- Added: label shows just "Local" (no number) for the brief moment right after tuning in, until the actual configured range is confirmed — avoids ever flashing a wrong/stale number
- Added: per-server JSON config ($profile:ShortRangeRadio.json, admin-editable, auto-created with defaults on first run) for the local range and per-faction (US/USSR/FIA) local frequency
- Changed: nothing about default squad or platoon radio behavior — no new item, no new radio, no new channel slot, no prefab changes; fully opt-in
- Fixed: local range value is read from the transceiver's actual (server-authoritative, replicated) state rather than a client-local config file, so the label always reflects what the server admin actually configured
- Tested: confirmed working end-to-end on a live dedicated server, including a real multiplayer test with a second player (audible range cutoff verified, not just server-log level)

Use Short Range Radio on your server

Add Short Range Radio to the game.mods array of your server config.json. The config generator builds the full file, the mod manager keeps the mod list and its dependencies organized, and the config validator checks an existing config. The adding mods guide and mod dependencies guide walk through it step by step.
